Guitar Hero Backlash?
When ever something becomes popular, there is an inevitable backlash. But the backlash against Guitar Hero is really cracking me up. Fox news, in their usual attempt to make this culture afraid of everything, tried to report a blistering story on the dangers of Guitar Hero – yes, friends, the evil tinnitus. Apparently they didn’t understand that repeating one motion for hours on end can cause stress on the body, something I was sure they learned in puberty.
Newsweek has recently posted a story (repackaged from the UK version with 'extra scarry stuff' for the US audience by the author of the oh-so-technically-accurate ‘Hackers’ movie) about how the joys of playing Guitar Hero will lead to a planet where no one knows how to play the guitar. Yes, apparently, while GTA will turn this world into one non-stop carjacking hooker fest, Guitar Hero will do the exact opposite, and guarantee that no one ever learns to play a musical instrument again.
Too funny.

You guys only wish you had a backlash as big as the Second Life backlash.
And don't get my wife started on guitar hero-caused tendonitis.
I think for the good of the industry Guitar Hero needs to sacrifice itself at the altar of the right-wing demigogues. Claim loudly and proudly that indeed a new "study" has found that playing GH2 does reduce one's desire to actually become a lead guitar player by satiating that deep seeded need.
Therefore, what society needs is a avalanche of gangbanging, gay-loving, unprotected sexing and other downright un-american games so that these sins can be purged in the comfort of our own homes instead of out on the street.
You know, do it for the kids.
I get tendonitis from playing the real guitar (stupid bar chords).
Maybe I should sue Gibson and Fender for not having a warning label on their products...
Bull scrap! I'm a 57 yr old high school teacher in Fremont, Cal. I'm also a guitarist of 40 yrs and an escapee from the dot com crash/ tech world. I find that Guitar Hero has stimulated the interest in playing a real instrument in many of my students. They want to do "for real" what the game prompts them through. I recently started a guitar club at my school and we have some amazing 14 and 15 yr old guitarists who also play and love Guitar Hero. Oh... I don't play the game. I played a few times when I bought it for my son. Fun, but I like the real thing.
Jason Booth is a genius. Asherons Call is an absolute masterpiece. He brought back all those sweet gaming memories and made them even better. I'm glad to see that he is still active and out there.
